When to Plant Hosta Seeds
Hosta seeds are best planted in late winter or early spring, usually indoors, to allow them to germinate before being transplanted outdoors. In areas with mild climates, such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Spain, and Mexico, seeds can be started indoors from January to March. Transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost date, when the soil has warmed and the risk of frost has passed.

Planting Hosta Seeds
Soil Preparation: Hostas thrive in fertile, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral soil pH (6.0-7.5).
Planting Depth and Spacing: Plant about 1/8 inch deep and 12 to 36 inches apart. Once the seedlings are established, transplant them outdoors.
Light: Partial or full shade, ideal for a shady garden or area with dappled sunlight. Indoors, place the seed tray in a bright location with indirect light.
Watering: Keep the soil constantly moist but not waterlogged during germination. Once established, hostas are relatively drought tolerant, but they do best with regular watering, especially during droughts.
Temperature: Germination is best in temperatures between 60°F and 70°F (15°C and 21°C). Once established, they tolerate a range of temperatures but prefer cool, shaded conditions.
